EXTENDING AN INVITATION
An Introduction to Community Health Outreach Workers (CHOW) and its Faith Based initiative, although CHOW has been in existence for 17 years the last 8 years The Center for Disease Control and Prevention, CDC has funded CHOW to implement various prevention activities nationally. The last such funding opportunity was aimed at the alarming rate of new HIV infection among the African American Community. CDC has named this innovative effort National Heighten Response (NHR). Chow’s response to this effort is to train ministers, clergy and church officials in the fundamentals of HIV. We content that the more church officials know about this insidious disease the more comfortable they would become to address the issue from the pulpit.
For Decades, the Black Church has been the vehicle for the dissemination of knowledge, political activism and social services in every aspect of daily living. In the African American community, the church is the single most important institution in term of its ability to influence the behavior of those persons it serves. The church is strategically positioned to play a significant role in the fight against the pandemic of HIV/AIDS. The faith community is unparalleled in its ability to touch the lives of every segment of the African American Community, the young, the old, the rich and the poor.
In May CHOW will launch a training program specifically aimed at the faith community in an effort to expand the knowledge base of persons who speak from the pulpit about the various aspects of HIV. We hope to inspire and encourage those clergy who take part in our training to share their knowledge with their congregation and social groups within the church. We hope that you acquire the strategies for comfortably addressing HIV and sexuality among the faith community so that knowledge becomes a strong prevention tool. We have buried too many too soon. Saving souls is not enough. Careers and lives must be saved as well.
